Scenic Railway in Branson, Missouri
The Branson Scenic Railway is a fun-to-travel tourist train that runs trips between Branson and Galena, Missouri to the north or Branson and Barren Folk Trestle, Arkansas to the south. Each trip is approximately 40 miles roundtrip and takes a little less than two hours to complete.
What is now the scenic railway was originally built as the White River Railway, operating for the first time in the first decade of the twentieth century. It traversed the difficult terrain of the Ozarks region and made it possible for those who wished to vacation in this area to reach their destination safely. The train now uses track owned by the Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad and the traffic on that line each day determines whether the Scenic Railway will head north or south. This entertaining train ride allows passengers to view areas outside Branson that aren’t accessible by automobile and a knowledgeable guide educates passengers about the history of the Ozarks region and tells stories of local folklore.
The beautiful vintage rail cars of the Branson Scenic Railway are always a hit with riders and provide excellent photo opportunities. Passengers can choose to ride in regular coach seating or in dome cars (for an extra cost), which allows them a better view of the mountains and other scenery along the journey.
The Branson Scenic Railway departs from historic Branson Depot, built in the early 1900s. The architecture is indicative of train depots of that area and the ambience of the station adds an extra touch of nostalgia to the train ride. At the depot, guests can visit the gift shop, which carries a fine array of railroad-related memorabilia that appeals to people of all ages.
Besides regular daily excursions, which run year-round, passengers can opt for a ride on the Dinner Train. This journey departs from the depot each Saturday at 5 pm throughout the months of April through December. Guests will enjoy a four-course candlelight dinner that includes a choice of three entrees as well as an appetizer, salad, vegetable, dessert, and beverage. Group rates are available and those celebrating special occasions can also be accommodated.
In addition, the Branson Scenic Railway also runs other special excursions throughout the year. These include The Polar Express holiday train ride, which features an opportunity to meet Santa Claus, enjoy hot chocolate and treats, sing Christmas carols, and more. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas and receive a special gift at the conclusion of the trip. Tickets are available in coach or first class seating for selected excursions starting in early November and concluding about a week before Christmas.
Tickets for all excursions are available online or can be purchased at the Branson Depot. Seating is unassigned but boarding numbers are issued in the order that reservations are made, so early booking is suggested to insure good seating. On regular journeys, a concession stand aboard the Silver Lake car offers refreshments for purchase.
