Kayaking in Branson, Missouri
While many travelers head to Branson to enjoy the musical shows and unique museum attractions there, an equal number of people come to this part of Missouri to experience the beauty of the Ozarks region and the wealth of outdoor activities the area has to offer. Because of the abundance of water in the area, water-based activities are enjoyed by many, including kayaking, a sport that continues to grow in popularity anywhere there’s a body of water to explore.
Kayaking in Branson can be enjoyed in two excellent locations – Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo. Table Rock Lake is a man-made reservoir that straddles Missouri and Arkansas, covering a total of about 43,000 acres. Lake Taneycomo, also a man-made reservoir, was first created in 1913 as a warm water lake and after the building of the Table Rock Dam became a cold water lake. Known for its excellent trout fishing, at times the lake can be quite deep and quick flowing, making for a great adventure.
Some visitors arrive in Branson with their own kayaking gear and enjoy a self-guided kayaking adventure with family or friends. Others take advantage of the handful of outfitters located in town that offer guided tours of the lakes and the use of appropriate equipment for the journey, including single, double, or triple kayaks. Businesses like Kayak Branson entice visitors with trips for all ages including those with little or no kayaking skills.
Generally, trips are offered all year long and each season provides a different experience. Regardless of the time of year, kayaking provides a look at some parts of the area that cannot be enjoyed by car, and the sport is often a favorite of photographers who take their gear along and capture images of the beauty they experience as they row gently along these Branson area lakes. Avid anglers also take advantage of kayaking and canoeing trips as an alternative to power boating as it’s a peaceful way to enjoy their favorite sport.
Outfitters also offer sunset or moonlight cruises alongside either of the lakes. Generally held during the warmer months, these trips allow paddlers to make their way across sparkling waters under the moon and star-filled sky. It’s a unique experience that the whole family can enjoy.
The float trips on Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo usually range from about 2 to 4 hours depending on the desired destination. Longer trips on the Flat Creek arm of Table Rock Lake, a designated mild Class I river, can also be scheduled through some outfitters. All of the trips are appropriate for the whole family but those with small children are encouraged to check out the 2-hour excursions first. Generally, anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied on a kayaking trip by a parent or responsible guardian.
