Mystic Caverns in Branson, Missouri
Located about 40 miles south of Branson on Scenic Byway 7 in Harrison, Arkansas, Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Caverns are situated in the heart of the Ozarks region. The caves, about an hour’s drive from the center of Branson, have been open to the general public since sometime in the mid-1920s when the first tours of Mystic Cave, which was then known as Mansion Cave, are said to have begun.
The early owners of the land where Mystic Cave sits were integral in preparing the cave for exploration by visitors of all ages. They worked to make the floors level so that trails could be built, though for many years visitors still had to enter the sinkhole entrance via a rickety wooden ladder. In 1949, the entrance was improved so that getting inside the cave was an easier task and one that could be enjoyed by all ages. The caverns were given their new name – Mystic Caverns. In the 1960s, further improvements were made to Mystic Cave and the area around the cave so that it would continue to be more visitor-friendly. Renovations included things like the installation of modern lighting and sturdy handrails, the addition of lime on the trails for better footing, and the building of a new ticket booth. Crystal Dome was also discovered during this period, more than a century after Mystic was discovered, and later opened to the public as well. For a short time, the two caves became part of a now-defunct amusement park known as Dogpatch USA.
Today, Mystic and Crystal Dome Caverns can accommodate visitors both young and old and the attraction continues to welcome a few million visitors each year, with an average attendance of about 15,000 per day, according to the caves’ owner and manager.
The two caves are located roughly 400 feet from each other and are often identified as “the twin caves.” Both are kept at a temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit all year long. They may be toured throughout the year except during January, when they are prone to flooding, making them too dangerous to traverse. Guests can purchase tickets for a guided tour, which includes visits to each of the caves. Tours depart about every 45 minutes and last about 80 minutes. Guides provide information about the history of the caves as well as a geological education about the formations one encounters inside the caverns. Guests will also view the Mystic Cave’s famous “pipe organ”. A tour of Crystal Dome includes a chance to experience that cave’s magnificent 8-story-high dome, a spectacular site and a great place for some photo taking.
Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome are open daily except Sundays from March through December. Limited hours are available in February and the caves are closed in January. Generally, the first tour begins at about 9 am and the last tour departs around 5:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased for tours of either one or both caverns, with the price for both being just a few dollars more than for just one cave, making it the best buy for those considering a tour. Children 4-12 enter at a reduced price and kids 3 and under can tour free of charge.
